Resource identification before demolition of Søndersø Waterworks
Even before Gamle Mursten Tech’s laboratory and test system were fully defined, developer Hofor chose Gamle Mursten to help with checking the bricks from Søndersø Waterworks and the possibility of reusing them.
At that time, the bricks could not yet be CE marked, but it supported the project by having feasibility studies done on the potential, whether the bricks were suitable for reuse and whether the quality of the mortar allowed cleaning. This ensured an informed basis for the choice of recycling the used bricks – for the demolisher, developer and consultants.
Hofor chose to demolish part of the buildings, send the bricks for cleaning and palletising at Gamle Mursten, and finally have them returned for the construction of a new, state-of-the-art treatment plant.
It gives a very special context to the history; from the first buildings on the site, the evolution of the architecture and the way of handling waste water, to new, updated systems.
The area around the treatment plant consists of rather large, heavy buildings, and it gives an authentic expression that the new part is built in the beautiful old bricks.
